Pronunciation and Exam Preparation

Comprehension, Pronunciation and Accent Reduction

  • Do people often ask you to repeat yourself?
  • Do people often ask you where you’re from?
  • Do you have difficulties understanding rapid English speech?

The aim of English pronunciation teaching is first and foremost to help the student achieve clarity, intelligibility and a high degree of accuracy when conversing with both native and non-native speakers of English. Not only does this include the correct formation of the 44 sounds of English but also the ability to master the rhythm and intonation of English, and to achieve the special voice quality of native speakers. At the same time, in order to understand what is being said around him or her, the student needs to have some practice in recognising and reproducing the characteristics of rapid connected speech.

This course is designed to help learners to use their English to become effective communicators.

The course covers the following

  • Familiarity with the phonetic alphabet for targeted practice
  • Correct production of English vowels, consonants, and diphthongs
  • Use of schwa
  • Word and sentence stress
  • Thought groups, prominence (focus words) and intonation (pitch)
  • Rate of speech
  • Volume and projection
  • Linking and other features of rapid connected speech
  • Correct breathing
  • Sociolinguistic aspects of English – regional accents, social class, etc.

Teaching method

  • Teachers are native speakers chosen for their qualifications, clear speech and personal qualities
  • Students are given a mixture of drill, recognition activities and paper-based games and exercises.
  • Recordings are made of the student’s voice to improve self-awareness
  • The teaching method is adapted to the learning style of the student
  • Students are given practice activities to do at home before their next lesson

Presentation Skills

  • Are you unsure of your accent?
  • Do you have problems communicating with an audience?

No matter how good your product may be or how innovative your ideas, lack of confidence in the way you speak and poor presentation skills can easily sabotage your message.

To move an audience you need to be able to express your ideas clearly, simply - and intelligibly. A monotonous voice without modulation, expression or power will fail to persuade or convince. Learn how to use changes in volume, pitch and pace to command attention and convince others.

The course covers the following

  • Correct production of English vowels, consonants, and diphthongs
  • The unstressed vowel
  • Syllables and/or grammatical endings of words
  • Word stress
  • Focus and special emphasis (prominence) in phrases
  • Rhythm in sentences
  • Thought groups and linking for clarity

  • Rate of speech
  • Volume and projection
  • Correct breathing techniques
  • Register and appropriacy

IELTS (International English Language Testing System)

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) assesses the English language proficiency of people who want to study or work where English is used as the language of communication. IELTS tests are held in over 1,000 locations across the world.

ELTS Academic measures the English language proficiency needed for an academic, higher education environment. IELTS General Training measures English language proficiency in a practical, everyday context. This version of the test is also often a visa requirement for those planning to migrate to English speaking countries including Australia, the UK, and New Zealand.

Why do we teach IELTS through private lessons?

In a class of up to 10 advanced students, there might be someone who needs special help with writing, another per son who needs extra speaking practice, etc. It would be difficult in this case for a teacher to focus on all students’ particular exam preparation needs. Therefore it is preferable that you work alone with the teacher so you will concentrate for the whole of each lesson on the particular areas of language that you need.

This is because in a class of up to 10 people, there might be a marketing researcher, a sales manager, a director, an analyst, an accountant, etc. Each student might come from a different professional background or country and have particular pronunciation issues.
